UNC Mental Health Specialists’ psychiatrists specialize in the evaluation and treatment of women with mood disorders that occur during periods of hormonal change. Reproductive mood disorders include depression and anxiety disorders associated with the reproductive life cycle. These reproductive mood disorders include: perinatal mood disorders: mood and anxiety disorders that occur during pregnancy and postpartum including depression during pregnancypostpartum depression (PPD),pregnancy loss and issues related to infertility; and menstrually related mood disorders: mood disorders and hormonal disturbances surrounding menopause or a woman’s monthly cycle including premenstrual dypshoric disorder (PMDD) andperimenopausal depression. Treatment includes psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, hormone replacement therapy, and other innovative treatments (such as rTMS) as appropriate for women with mood disorders and hormonal disturbance.
