Neither the Chapel Hill nor Raleigh offices of UNC Mental Health Specialists accepts third party payments. Payment in full is due at the time of service. Clients are, however, given the necessary documentation of services rendered, including diagnostic and treatment codes, which will allow them to file for reimbursement for out-of-network services from their insurance provider.

Insurance
Neither the Chapel Hill nor Raleigh offices of the UNC Mental Health Specialists accepts third-party (i.e. insurance) payments, nor does UNC Mental Health Specialists file for insurance reimbursement on behalf of patients. We will, however, make every effort to provide the required documentation, including diagnostic and treatment codes, that you will need to file on your own behalf for reimbursement by your insurer for out-of-network services.
Most health insurance policies have annual deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and/or limits on the number of visits per year allowed. It is ultimately the patient's responsibility to review your policy carefully for details about coverage and reimbursement rates.
While most of the services we offer are covered, at least to some extent, by health insurance providers, some may not be. For your own peace of mind, please make sure you review your policy carefully prior to your initial visit.
Some insurers may also require prior authorization for mental health services. If this is true for you, you will want also to obtain the required authorization prior to the initial visit. If you participate in a managed care plan, subsequent visits may also need authorization from the insurance carrier.
Services Not Covered by Insurance
The following are typically not covered by insurance policies:
- missed appointments;
- telephone consultations;
- school observations;
- written communications provided on a patient's behalf.
Please check with your insurer for confirmation.
